The Very Polish Cut-Outs have once again sought out forgotten and somewhat obscure artists whose music is in need of a revival. This time, they have chosen the duo MODFUNK, who were active in the Polish electronic music scene from 1999 to 2009. Piotr Jarecki and Martin Tigermann, two Varsovians who shared a love for the "french touch" genre that dominated dancefloors worldwide at the time, showcasing Daft Punk, Cassius, Stardust, and Bob Sinclar, were the brains behind the project.
Modfunk's debut album, "Superfusion," heavily drew from the works of French artists. After its release, the duo performed at several festivals, including Gdynia's Open'er, Cracow's Selector, and Slovakia's Moonride. Additionally, they produced remixes for renowned vocalists such as Monika Brodka and Reni Jusis.
Their second album, "Emofunk," released in 2008, paid tribute to the raw and aggressive electro style that was characteristic of the new wave of French sound represented by artists like Justice, SebastiAn, and Mr. Oizo. Modfunk also established a connection with French idols during this time, which led to Philippe Zdar of the Cassius group guesting on their album and singing on "Showtime." Modfunk's final performance as a group was at the Open'er festival in 2009, and they went their separate ways afterwards. However, they left behind an impressive musical legacy and a unique sound for the time in Poland, which can be confidently labeled "The Very Polish French Touch."
Zambon, the head of TVPCO, is responsible for the "Journey Through Sound (Selected recordings 1999 - 2009)" compilation. It comprises a subjective and cross-sectional selection of the ten best tracks from Modfunk's entire discography. While their music evolved over the years, they never abandoned their French-inspired sound, which is why the compilation includes tracks like "Souler" and "The Wav," which draw inspiration from Daft Punk. It also features "Love," a track sung in Polish that echoes Romanthony's work, as well as "Texmex" and "Wishes," two electropop tracks that could have been released on Ed Banger Records.
The compilation marks Modfunk's vinyl debut and will be available in two versions: a traditional black one and an exclusive, limited splatter version. The artwork, a beautiful cover, was created by Bartosz Szymkiewicz.
The edition is limited to 500 copies..

excellent album! It really has a wonderful, magical vibe, like from the summer 70’s. Its light, subtle and relaxic - I like it sooo much! kubafotografuje

The first track is a bit of an outlier, perhaps connecting back to earlier albums where jazz foundations lead the way, before going all out berserk with the beats, beats, and beats. Bass and electronics are now the mainstays over the hip-hop influenced rhythms. But the horns are still layered back in with style. I initially passed this over, but the Szlam / Ścieki tracks blew my socks off and in desperation for more, I was led back to this. I can't wait to see where Błoto go next. rvss.eel
